The Nanospyder is Volkswagens's entry for
Design Los Angeles. Design Los Angeles was started last year as an
incentive to car manufacturers to investigate new technologies and
solutions to combat environmental problems with
an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
The Nanospyder incorporates many technical
features that are not yet commercially available. Covering the
skin are billions of nano devices which react to the environment such
as actively making crumple zones as and where they are needed in a
crash.
Power for the electric motors is primarily
generated by a hydrogen fuel cell. This
year, contestants have to prove themselves by "creating a vehicle that
is environmentally aware of its global footprint". The Nonospyder
sees competition from the likes of Toyota, with their Renewable
Lifestyle Vehicle (RLV)
The Toyota entry
seats two people with the driver pedalling for power with an
electric motor, for when traffic speeds increase – with an aimed top
speed of 75mph. Toyota says the two optimum speeds - 5mph and 75mph.
The winner will be
announced on 30 November.
