Ford Focus Cmax 1.6 Tdci 90: I bought my
cmax used at 11 months old and 14,000 miles, my criteria being economy
for a 20 mile commute through country and city and space for two
bicycles inside for our trips away.
Economy: I fill the tank to the brim every time and work the mileage out
from that. Up to 25,000 miles I was getting 58 to 61 mpg, then something
went amiss and it has now dropped to 51 - 54 mpg. My driving has always
been the same, accelerate briskly up to 60 and cruise at 60. My commute
has not changed so what has happened?
I finally got the local dealers to put the car on the diagnostic
computer (initially they told me the mpg drop was due to having the
tyres replaced!)and they found that a cam sensor had failed & replaced
it, but the mpg just improved marginally from 50 up to 51-54.
In other ways the car is brilliant!
I do not need 5 seats so I have taken 2 of the rear seats out both to
save weight and increase flexibility.
I sometimes carry 2 bicycles and find that if I take the front wheels
off the fit in backwards down the nearside - leaving plenty of space for
all our luggage and other paraphanalia. I csrry the luggage compartment
cover behind my seat & when I take the bikes out this slips back in
position giving some privacy from prying eyes in the boot. All in all a
very flexible arrangement, especially with the darkened glass.
One major downside is the lack of a spare tyre: mine comes with the
optional Sportpack 1 wheels & tyres, which come with a tyre inflator set
for use in an emergency.
The set comprises a plug in compressor box and a screw in bottle of
liquid rubber. Its very simple to use once you have understood the
instructions, but you have to check the pressure on the fitted pressure
gauge - pity they didn't fit a small light in the unit for use at night
- it would have been so easy to do so!
The lack of a spare is pretty inconvienient, and I'll check before
buying a car in the future as I don't really want the following hassles:
1. Messy - the rubber does tend to squirt about a bit when you take the
hose off the tyre.
2. Lack of light in the unit - if the pressure is crucial, then you need
light at night to be able to check it!!!
3. A refill costs nearly £37 - after a few punctures it gets expensive!
4. After use you can use the compressor again, but it needs a good clean
and I would not like to think of the cost of replacing it1
5, Not every tyre depot will repair a tyre that has had liquid rubber in
- could be very expensive if your recently new tyre has to be thrown
away because of a bit of liquid rubber!
I'll certainly think very hard before ver buying a car in the future
without some form of spare wheel.
Anyway, that is not the fault of the Cmax, which I can highly recommend
as a good all round economical car which I intend to keep for a long
time yet. (However I may buy myself a spare wheel & jack!)
Oh, one other thing: the Quickclear screen is great - we get a lot of
cold conditions where I live and it clears in under a minute. But, and
its a big but! What use is a quickclear screen if you then have a 20
mile commute through heavy winter traffic and your window washers are
frozen?
Why have Ford not been able to ensure that the window washers work at
low temperatures? Surely it just needs some heating wire through the
washer supply pipes and a heating element in the washer bottle linked to
a teperature sensor? Is this rocket science, Ford?
Still the best all round car I've had

C max 1.8 Diesel Titanium: Has
the Sport X upgrade. My first Ford in 40 years
of driving. Comfortable, reliable fun to drive,
returns combined 48mpg. Tows a 1200kg caravan
with total ease returning 37mpg whilst towing.
My only complaint is that the rear seats don't
fold flat. very pleased all round. would
consider another.
