BMW have announced
that 100 Hydrogen 7s will be built in 2007.
The Hydrogen 7 will boast a 6.0 litre 12-cylinder engine as found in the current
760iL that can also run on hydrogen.
Range is limited to 125 miles
running on Hydrogen however combined with its petrol tank, total range
is increase to 425miles. Hydrogen cars are still in their infancy,
duel-fuel vehicles are a must as there is a limited availability of
liquefied hydrogen filling stations.
The Hydrogen 7 will
accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.5sec, and hit a maximum speed of 143mph
with the only emission being water while running on hydrogen alone.
Hydrogen engines generally produces less power than its petrol or diesel
counterpart but BMW claim that their V12 engine can produce 260bhp in
either petrol or hydrogen mode making it the world’s first
super-low-emissions luxury vehicle.
The
Hydrogen 7 will make its public debut at
the Los Angeles Motor Show on November
28 however the first 100 cars
will be leased to
selected corporate drivers in order to help research the new hydrogen
fuel technology.
