General Motors
has revealed the
Volt, an electric-powered
vehicle they hope to one day put
into production.
GM took the lead in alternative
fuel vehicles over a decade ago
with the EV1 electric car which
it later abandoned. This was
recently turned into a
documentary called "Who killed
the electric car?"
criticising their actions.
The Volt differs from other
electric cars in that it still
has a petrol engine, however the 1.0 litre
biofuel engine engine does not
power the car but is only there
to
recharge the batteries on the
move. This gives the Volt a range of
up to 640 miles. When
running on
batteries alone, the Volt has a
range of 40 miles without
needing to use the E85 (85%
ethanol to 15% petrol) engine. "More
than half of all Americans live
within 20 miles of where they
work," said GM Product Chief Bob
Lutz. "In that case, you might
never burn a drop of gas during
the life of the car."
The Volt could form the basis of
a production car early in the
next decade.
