Cost of diesel increase can power
an electric vehicle for a year
With the cost of fuel continuing to rise,
van drivers are now paying out an average £1,250 a year extra on diesel*
compared to 2007 – more than the total cost of charging a Modec zero
emission vehicle for a year. With interest now at its highest since the
Coventry factory opened in March 2007, the Modec vehicles are a popular
example of how clean automotive alternatives are a reality and are being
made to work within the commercial environment.
With a fuel cost of only 7p per mile,
compared to 29p for an equivalent diesel van, the Modec vehicles are not
only cost effective, but environmentally friendly, eliminating an
average 9 tonnes of CO2 each year for every diesel vehicle
replaced. When charged using electricity from renewable sources these
vans prove that dependency on fossil fuel is no longer necessary – or
the price we pay for it, both financial and environmental.
“Despite often being viewed as a
solution for the future, electric vehicles are an economically viable
reality and in use within commercial fleets today,” comments Trevor
Power, Modec. “During the six years of research and development
invested in the Modec vehicle, we made significant advances in the
technologies used and have created a commercial vehicle that offers a
serious alternative to the diesel fleet. Needless to say, these vehicles
will not be affected by the fuel strikes disrupting the UK.”
Cost figures based on average 15,000
miles per year:
*Diesel Van
2007– 98p per litre x 4.27 = £4.41 per gallon ÷ 20 (mpg) = 21p per mile
x 15,000 miles = £3,241 per year
2008 - £1.28 per litre x 4.27 = £5.76
per gallon ÷ 20 (mpg) = 29p per mile x 15,000 miles = £4,350 per year
Price increase in diesel = £1,109
between 2007 and 2008
Modec Van
Electricity - 8.5p per kWh. 1.2 miles per kWh = 7p per mile x 15,000
miles = £1,050 per year
