Polo
In 2006 Volkswagen presented its first
series production vehicle under the BlueMotion banner: the Polo
BlueMotion. The compact vehicle with a power output of 59 kW / 80 PS
consumes an average of just 3.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, but
is just as agile as a conventional Polo with the same specifications.
0 to 62 mph takes just 12.8 seconds before reaching a maximum of 109
mph.
Fuel consumption and emission values from
the 1.4 litre TDi diesel engine have been reduced by saving weight,
aerodynamic refinements and longer gearing. The result is an
potential combined fuel consumption figure of over 72 mpg, a potential
range in excess of 700-miles and a only 102 g/km of CO2.
This Polo marks the start of Volkswagen's
BlueMotion sustainability campaign. BlueMotion does not only refer to
the consumption and emissions figures of a vehicle – it also refers to
the company as a whole. BlueMotion will be developed into a seal
of approval which will be awarded to the most fuel-efficient vehicles in
a model range.
The Passat BlueMotion will be premiered at
the Geneva motor show in March.
CO2
emission level of just 136 g/km are
achieve through the fine tuning of the engine, which was already
extremely efficient. In this case a 77 kW / 105 bhp TDI engine with a
diesel particulate filter fitted as standard. This fuel efficiency does
not, however, reduce levels of agility.
The Polo BlueMotion will go on sale in the
UK this summer at a price yet to be confirmed.
