How to Qualify
To qualify for exemption
exemption of the London
Congestion Charge, you will have
to register with Transport for
London (TfL). Details of
the application process and
forms can be found on the TfL
website.
To be eligible to register for
the alternative fuel vehicle
discount, your vehicle must be
powered by an alternative fuel,
bio fuel or dual fuel and not
solely by petrol or diesel.
Electric vehicles must be
powered entirely by stored
electricity and defined as
‘Electric’ by the DVLA.
You will also be asked for a
Alternative Fuel Vehicle
Conversion certificate to prove
that the discount for this type
of vehicle is valid.
Certificates can be obtained
either from the manufacturer, or
the organisation which carried
out the conversion. These
documents should be completed
and returned to Transport for
London at the address provided
on their site.
To
be eligible the vehicle must be
listed on the current Energy
Saving Trust PowerShift register
or the Energy Saving Trust
CleanUp register. Electric
vehicles are not listed as they
are all exempt. Standards
for cars that run on alternative
fuel are constantly under
review. Because
technological improvements are
so rapid, the list of vehicles

Proposed Changes to the Congestion
Charge
The Mayor of London, Boris
Johnson, has ended
proposals to
introduce a CO2 Charge (08 July
2008).
This means there will be no
increase charge of £25 per day
for drivers of vehicles emitting
226 g/km and above of CO2 (VED
Band G and some equivalent Band
F vehicles) from October 2008.
The 100 per cent discount for
vehicles emitting up to 120 g/km
of CO2 (VED Band A and B
vehicles), has been removed.
In addition there will be no
change for residents registered
for the 90 per cent discount
with these types of vehicles.
The decision by the Mayor means
the discount for
alternative fuel vehicles
will remain in place and the
existing Congestion Charge
scheme will not be affected.
