VW Debut Gas Power

26 November 2010

VW Debut Gas Power

The annual Race of Champions showdown returns to Germany this weekend (27-28 November) for the first time in 21 years, and the Scirocco R-Cup race car will join a list of legendary names from the world of motorsport as they compete to claim the title of ‘Champion of Champions’.

Taking place at the Düsseldorf Football Arena, the 2010 Race of Champions will feature some of the most successful racers from around the world, and the Scirocco R-Cup race car marks the first time a vehicle powered by gas has competed in the event.  The 275 PS coupés are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine run on bio-CNG which reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent.

Among the list of famous names taking part are Sébastian Loeb (seven-time World Rally Championship winner and three-time Race of Champions ‘Champion of Champions’), Andy Priaulx (three time WTCC champion), Jason Plato (double British Touring Car Championship winner), Alain Prost  (four-time Formula 1 world champion) and the German pairing of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher and the recently-crowned 2010 Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The 2010 season saw the eco-conscious Scirocco R-Cup complete its inaugural season as the partner series of the popular DTM.  The grids were made up of a wide range of racing talent throughout the year, with guest drives from a number of motorsport legends including Martin Brundle, Mark Blundell, Johnny Herbert, Carlos Sainz and Derek Bell.
